(Living)
(1935-2035)
Born and raised 18 miles outside of NYC, I fell in love with the Northwest while working as a secretary at Yale University during a summer vacation driving trip across the US; however, it took another 20 years to move to Seattle where I worked as an administrative assistant and tried college before moving to Germany for an 11-year Civil Service career during which I enjoyed acting with a local theater group and traveling as much as possible (even taking a cooking course in Paris and following Formula I Grand Prix races across Europe). High point of living in Germany was adopting my wonderful daughter, Shane (now more so since she provided me with an adorable grandson in April, 2007).
My art career arose in the 80’s following my retirement and return to Washington State where I lived in Tacoma for 20 years co-founding Gallery Row, an artist’s cooperative in Gig Harbor. My home attests to the workshops I organized and ran for nationally-known water media artists, during which time I was able to amass an impressive art collection. Following my divorce I relocated to Whidbey Island in 1997 where I’ve been happily ensconced at my
studio (Ann’s Coup d’Art) on the corner of 9th & Center Streets in Coupeville.
My art style must reflect my NY roots as it could best be described as eclectic often with a touch of humor. Often told by observers that they see no consistency in my art, I accept the observation as a compliment. When artists strive to be identified by a specific style, I feel they lock themselves into their reinforced “format” and can fail to grow. That has never worked for me. I need to enter an arena of discomfort to feel challenged. I find my greatest challenges in exploring new areas whether they be medium or subject matter. Fortunately, or perhaps not, I am unable to stick with one thing any length of time. I see and feel ART in everything, and I want to do it all….paper, paint, structures, fibers, tin cans, thrift store items, shells, wood, rocks, or road findings….it all tweaks my creative juices. Too many times I’ve risked the lives of myself or friends, running into a roadway to retrieve some multi mutilated item (fortunately inorganic). I regard my studio as an adult playpen and am most stimulated intermingling with other artists. |
